New to Darnall shed, Sheffield, on 4th January 1963 as D6802, it was to remain Eastern Region allocated for over twenty four years before making a fleeting visit to Scotland at ED on 5th May 1987. After a mere ten months it found itself in South Wales at CF. Overhauled and rebuilt as a Heavyweight it was renumbered to 37712 on 1st August 1988. In January 1989 it became part of the Metals Sector, moving between CF and TE and by April 1993 it was working for the Petroleum Sector and allocated to IM. Later it became part of the Transrail fleet and later still EWS. Fitted for Sandite operation in 2003 it spent a couple of winter seasons on these duties before being taken out of traffic and stored on 12th December 2004. It was purchased for further duties by West Coast Railways at the end of 2007.
The scraping process started in October 2025 when the loc was lifted from the bogies and cut in two. Number 2 end was cut off by the staff at West Coast for the Cab Yard. The nose from number 1 end was also saved.
The plan is to restore the cab to its triple grey freight livery and a possibility of it becoming a simulator in the future
