We are slowly setting up a volunteer program for The Cab Yard and there are no fixed days as yet buts it’s usual for people on site Saturdays and Wednesdays. There are many opportunities to volunteer at The Cab Yard and at the Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway.
Many of our cabs need restoration and we are building a team of people who can become involved and have a say in what we are trying to achieve. There is also rolling stock, carriage, and wagons in need of restoration. We are fitting out our maintenance shed to provide a warm dry working environment for the long winter days.
These are the main areas where volunteers can become involved:
- Restoring controls
- Rubbing down paintwork
- Paint preparation including filling and sanding
- Painting
- Welding
- Fibreglassing
- Glazing
- Timber work cabs walls and ceilings
- Electrical fitting of new working cab lights and headlights
- Showing visitors around the cabs
- Researching the history of the cabs in pictures and text
- Visiting other preserved railways
- Creating a train simulators cab
- Join the information stand in the class 40 cab, visiting shows across the country
We will share the skills we have with you and learn new skills from you. There is no pressure just the common aim and enjoyment of restoring trains for others to enjoy as visitors. Meet new people and make new friends
